The bay was blanketed in mist this morning with patches of the rising sun breaking through giving a very “sharky” feeling to the area as we launched at a nice and early time of 7am. We arrived on anchor as the second boat out and waited patiently for a shark to arrive. Whilst it appears that our period of shark scarcity is over, sightings and activity in the bay is still very touch and go and we experienced a wait of just over an hour this morning for our first sighting. The shark that saved the morning was the same female that we have been seeing the last two days, an animal just over 3.0m in length, she was also one of the sharks we were seeing in January of this year, and has become a favourite amongst our crew and guests as she always seems happy to come and visit the boat in a time when sightings are slow. We also had a brief view of the small, acoustically tagged male that appeared around the boat yesterday and much like previous he was shy and did not return. The trip and sharks had constant companions in the form of Short-tailed stingrays that glided around the boat. Before heading back to shore we made a turn by Shark Alley and the ever entertaining Cape Fur seals.

The second trip of the day experienced a similar waiting time as the first had with a new shark arriving at the boat after approximately an hours wait. This was a large shark estimates at 4.0m in length and the first sighting for us of this animal for the season. It made a pass and moved on before thankfully returning later on in the trip. The smaller female from this morning’s trip and the previous days also turned up for the afternoon.

A successful day out on the water.
